How to get to the Aran Islands from Galway

By Ferry

If you’re planning an Aran Islands day trip from Galway, taking the ferry over is the most popular option. Ferry routes are run by Aran Island Ferries and depart from Galway City and Rossaveel Ferry Terminal.

From the Port of Galway, there’s a seasonal ferry service (March to September) which runs to Inishmore. An adult return costs €49 (£41) while a child return costs €25 (£21). The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours.

There’s much more flexibility if you head to Rossaveel Ferry Terminal. From this terminal, you can head to all three islands and ferries sail year-round. An adult return costs €30 (£25) while a child return costs €15 (£12.60). Ferries from Rossaveel take between 40-60 minutes, depending on which island you’re visiting.

*If you’re planning to visit the Cliffs of Moher first, you can always go there and then head to Doolin. From here, you can take the Doolin Ferry over to the Aran Islands. The journey takes between 15-35 minutes depending on which island you visit.

Shuttle Bus

If you’re travelling out of season or you plan to visit Inishmaan or Inisheer, you’ll be departing from Rossaveel Ferry Terminal. This terminal is around a 45-55 minute drive depending on the traffic coming out of Galway and there’s parking on-site.

For those who can’t drive, there’s a shuttle bus that runs between the two locations. The shuttle bus departs from Victoria Place and must be booked at least 12 hours in advance. An adult return fare is €10 (£8.40) while a child return ticket costs €7 (£5.90). Discounts are available for students and senior citizens.

Just be aware that the shuttle bus can’t carry bicycles or pets so you’ll need to keep this in mind.

Alternatively, you can take the 424 bus service which is run by Bus Éireann. This service runs between Galway and Lettermullen, with Rossaveel Ferry Terminal being one of the stops. The journey takes around 55 minutes. However, tickets are more expensive, with an adult day return costing €16 (£13.45).

By Plane

If money isn’t an issue, then travelling by air to the Aran Islands is a fantastic experience. With Aer Arann Islands, you can fly to all three islands (Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer) from Connemara Regional Airport. Better yet, flights take less than 10 minutes and you’ll get fantastic views!

Prices may vary, but typically an adult single from Connemara Airport costs €35 (£29.40). You can expect to pay €63 (£52.90) for an adult return. No matter which island you visit, the prices are the same.

Flights operate year-round but are weather-dependent so you’ll need to check this in advance. You can read the terms and conditions on the official website if you’re unsure.

Connemara Airport is around a 40-minute drive from Galway. If you don’t have your own vehicle, there’s a shuttle bus which runs between the two destinations. A single bus ticket generally costs €5 (£4.20) while a return costs €10 (£8.40).

Those planning a day trip from Galway to the Aran Islands can choose from plenty of tour options! Taking a tour is a great option, especially if you’d prefer to have all the logistics sorted for you so you can just enjoy the day.

Inishmaan (Inis Meáin)

Inishmaan is the least visited of all three islands. Approximately 200 people live here (compared to Inishmore’s 800), so the island offers a more authentic experience, away from the crowds that Inis Mór can encounter.

As well as offering Celtic & Christian sites, Inishmaan is a great place to experience Irish culture and traditions. Interestingly enough, this island also used to be a retreat for J.M. Synge, an iconic Irish playwright.

Popular attractions on Inishmaan include Dún Chonchúir, Teach Synge, Cathaoir Synge, and Dún Fearbhaí. There’s also the Inis Meáin Knitting Company shop, where you can purchase authentic knitwear.

Inisheer (Inis Oírr)

Inisheer is the smallest of the three Aran Islands and is known for its distinctive charm. Similar to the Burren National Park, this island boasts unusual natural features and on a clear day, you’ll get fantastic views of the Cliffs of Moher.
