Vietnam quickly became one of our favourite countries in Southeast Asia as it has so much to offer.

This incredible country is famous for its delicious food, diverse landscapes, and culture – so it’s hard not to fall in love.

After spending 3 weeks in Vietnam, we visited some incredible destinations; starting our journey in the South of the country and making our way up North!

This 3-week Vietnam itinerary is easy to follow and allows you to see the best of what this country has to offer.

From bustling cities to pristine beaches, Vietnam has it all so let’s dive straight in…

The Ultimate 3-week Vietnam Itinerary

As we mentioned previously our 3-week Vietnam itinerary started in the south of the country as we travelled overland through Cambodia.

Although we only spent three weeks in Vietnam we got to visit a variety of destinations!

This itinerary includes some downtime on the beach and a chance to explore the country’s bustling cities so it has a bit of everything.

Let’s dive into this 3-week Vietnam itinerary…

Days 1-3: Ho Chi Minh City

The first destination on this 3-week Vietnam itinerary is the chaotic Ho Chi Minh City.

The cities in Vietnam are known to be crazy, and Ho Chi Minh is no different. Some motorists even drive on the footpath to avoid the roads so make sure you keep your eyes peeled!

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh is the largest city in the country with a whopping population of over 8 million people. Boasting towering skyscrapers, colonial architecture, and delicious street food, this isn’t a place you want to leave off your itinerary.

This city played an important part in the Vietnam War too which makes it one of the best places to visit if you’re looking to learn about the country’s history.

Things to do in Ho Chi Minh City

There are plenty of fantastic things to do in Ho Chi Minh but the War Remnants Museum is a must-visit. It’s dedicated to the Vietnam War that took place between 1955-1975, and you’ll learn about the horrific war crimes that occurred during this period.

A fair word of warning, the War Remnants Museum is an emotional place as there are lots of graphic exhibits here. However, it’s the best place to visit if you’re wanting to learn about the history of the war.

• Visit the Chu Chi Tunnels – This is a guided tour that will take you down into the tunnels!
• The Notre Dame Cathedral
• Go on a trip along the Mekong Delta – You can go on a tour that will take you on a cruise of the Mekong Delta and to a local temple!
• Central Post Office Saigon
• Head out on a street food tour to learn about Vietnam’s food culture and of course, taste some delicious local dishes!

Where to Stay in Ho Chi Minh City

Budget: Thuy Huong Homestay

We stayed in this little homestay during our visit to Ho Chi Minh and the host is just so lovely! She’s always happy to help with anything you need and will go out of her way to make sure you have the best experience.

The rooms are extremely cosy too, and you’ll have access to free WiFi, a TV, and a fridge during your stay.

Mid-range: Icon Saigon – LifeStyle Design Hotel

Icon Saigon is a 4* hotel that’s known for its fantastic facilities, gorgeous rooms, and great location. With each stay, you’ll have a continental breakfast, and you’ll have access to a variety of amenities.

This includes a swimming pool, a fitness centre, a bar, and a restaurant.

Luxury: Caravelle Saigon

This 5* hotel is located right in the city centre so it’s just a short walk from some of Ho Chi Minh’s most popular attractions. This includes the iconic Nguyen Walking Street!

With a swimming pool, an on-site spa, several restaurants, and a rooftop bar – this place has so much to offer.

How to Get Around Ho Chi Minh City

Luckily Ho Chi Minh is a very walkable city as many of the popular tourist attractions are located close together. However, there are plenty of other ways to get around as the city has an efficient public transport system.

The public buses in Ho Chi Minh are cheap and easy to use, and they serve a variety of routes throughout the city. We’d recommend getting a map though as the network of bus routes can get pretty complicated.

Another great way to get around the city is by using taxis as they’re relatively cheap and convenient.

The traffic does tend to get pretty bad in Ho Chi Minh though which is why motorbike taxis are often the way to go. You’ll get around much quicker and you won’t get stuck in traffic as they can just whizz in and out.

Days 4-5: Mui Ne

If you’re dreaming of palm trees and white sands after spending some time in Ho Chi Minh; head to Mui Ne. This popular seaside resort is just a 4.5-hour drive from the city.

Famous for its laid-back atmosphere, water sports, and epic sunsets, Mui Ne is a great place to relax for a few days before continuing on this Vietnam travel itinerary.

What’s great about this place is that the original fishing village still remains to this day. Here, you can see the locals bringing in their fish and you’ll get to appreciate their way of life.

Offering both luxury resorts and a range of budget guesthouses, this coastal destination has something for everyone! So what are you waiting for?

Things to do in Mui Ne

Mui Ne is known for its iconic sand dunes and there are two types; the red sand dunes and the white sand dunes. You can often go on a tour that includes both so you don’t need to travel between the two.

As their name suggests, these dunes differ in colour and that’s why it’s a good idea to see both. Whether you’re there to watch the sunset or sand surf, it’s a good idea to just take your time and appreciate the beauty of the area.

These dunes alone are enough of a reason to include Mui Ne on your 3-week Vietnam itinerary!

Budget: EVA HUT Mui Ne Beach Hostel

You won’t find a hostel in a better location than this one! Offering its own beach area, an array of fantastic facilities, and dirt-cheap rooms this place is a popular option for budget travellers!

If you stay here you’ll have the use of a shared lounge area, a bar, a billiards table, and a restaurant.

Mid-range: Victoria Phan Thiet Beach Resort & Spa

Boasting two swimming pools, an on-site spa, and a fitness centre, Victoria Phan Thiet Beach Resort is the perfect option if you’re looking to relax.

The highlight of this place though has to be its beachfront ocean bungalows that offer gorgeous views of the sea!

Luxury: Anantara Mui Ne Resort

This 5* resort is located right on the beach so many of the rooms offer stunning sea views. With a swimming pool, a fitness centre, a relaxing garden area, and several dining options, you won’t run out of things to do here!

There’s even a spa and wellness centre on-site where you can treat yourself to a massage.

How to Get Around Mui Ne

The thing to keep in mind with Nui Ne is that many of the properties aren’t located in the town centre. Instead, most of them are situated along the beachfront which is where you want to be staying!

For this reason, one of the best ways to get around is simply to walk along the beach between some of the attractions. However, some are a bit further away so many people choose to hire a bicycle or motorbike.

One of the most popular ways to get around Mui Ne is simply by taking a tour. Many of the popular sites are all located relatively close together, and you’ll have all your transport covered this way!

Days 6-8: Hoi An

If you’re spending 3 weeks in Vietnam then you HAVE to visit Hoi An! This gorgeous ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it’s one of the most beautiful places you’ll visit in Southeast Asia.

Hoi An is located along the Thu Bon River, and it’s a well-preserved Asian port that dates back between the 15th and 19th centuries. That’s why it’s one of the most popular destinations in the country!

Full of colourful lanterns, historic pagodas, and quaint river boats, the charm of this place is unparalleled. The city is even more beautiful at night as you wander along the cobblestone streets and the alleyways are lit up by the lanterns.

Hoi An is a must for any backpacking Vietnam route so don’t leave it off your itinerary!

Things to do in Hoi An

One of the most popular things to see in Hoi An is the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge. Also known as Chùa Cầu or Cau Pagoda, this impressive footbridge was built in the 1590s so it’s been around for hundreds of years.

The detail of this bridge is remarkable and it’s part of the reason why Chùa Cầu is so iconic. The sculptures of this bridge show two dogs and two monkeys and there are several theories about this!

One is that many of the emperors were born during the years of the dog and monkey, whilst another theory is that the construction of the bridge started during the year of the monkey and then finished in the year of the dog.

Where to Stay in Hoi An

Budget: Village Love Homestay

Although Village Love Homestay isn’t in the town centre, it’s within walking distance. The rooms here are extremely cheap, and you’ll get breakfast included too!

There are a variety of rooms to choose from and some even have a private balcony so you can enjoy the views.

Mid-range: Hoi An Odyssey Hotel & Spa

Hoi An Odyssey Hotel & Spa is just an 18-minute walk from the Old Town and it’s known for its fantastic facilities. That includes an on-site spa, an outdoor pool, a restaurant, and a bar.

The rooms here are fantastic too, and some of the suites offer striking views of the river!

Luxury: Cozy Savvy Boutique Hotel Hoi An

This gorgeous hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool, an on-site restaurant, a shared lounge area, and a spa. If you stay here, you’ll also benefit from a sauna, fitness centre, and billiards tables.

Not only that but the suites here are beautiful and modern, and feature plenty of amenities.

How to Get Around Hoi An

Hoi An is an extremely walkable city and most of the attractions are located close together. That means you can spend more time exploring the sites and less time getting around!

Another fantastic way to get around is by hiring a bicycle! Hoi An’s centre is cut off from cars and motorbikes during most of the day so you won’t have any problems with the traffic here.

Many of the hotels in Hoi An have bicycle rentals and you can get them for a very cheap price. Some of the properties will even let you take them for free which is always handy!

If you’re looking to explore the surrounding area then there are taxis available. Just make sure you book through a reliable taxi company.

Days 9-10: Da Nang

Da Nang is a coastal city that’s known for its beautiful beaches and is a must for any Vietnam 3-week itinerary. With a coastline of 30 km, calm waters, and white sands, this is the perfect place to relax.

Da Nang is just a 1-hour drive from Hoi An and is the halfway point between the cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.

Whether you’re looking to visit historical sites, do some shopping, or spend some time on the beach, this city has something for everyone!

One of the most famous beaches in this area is My Khe Beach which is one of the more developed beaches in Da Nang. This is because it was a popular spot for soldiers during the Vietnam-US War.

Things to do in Da Nang

Da Nang’s most popular attraction is the famous Ba Na Hills! It’s a resort that was founded by French colonists in 1919 as a tourist spot and there’s a cable car that will take you up to the top.

Once you’ve made it to Ba Na Hills you can explore the ‘French village’, experience a show, or walk along the Golden Bridge. The Golden Bridge is 150 metres (492 feet) long with a unique design that looks like it’s being held up by two hands.

This isn’t a place you want to leave off your 3-week Vietnam itinerary so what are you waiting for?

This homestay is situated right in the centre of Da Nang so you’ll be in a great location. All rooms here come with a private bathroom and plenty of amenities including WiFi and air conditioning.

There’s also a shared kitchen on the property that you can take advantage of if you’re looking to cut costs!

Mid-range: Fivitel Boutique Da Nang

Boasting two swimming pools, an on-site restaurant, a bar, and a fitness centre – this place has a lot to offer. There’s even a business centre at the hotel and a kid’s club which is handy if you’re travelling as a family.

Not only that but you’ll find plenty of awesome attractions nearby!

Luxury: Meliá Vinpearl Danang Riverfront

This is one of the most beautiful hotels in Da Nang as it overlooks the Han River and the city. With four restaurants, a rooftop bar, and an outdoor pool – you won’t find many hotels like this one!

Many of the rooms also feature a private balcony and ocean views.

How to Get Around Da Nang

Da Nang is the 4th largest city in the country so it’s not very walkable I’m afraid. However, some of the attractions are located relatively close together so you can explore some of the city on foot.

Don’t worry though as there are plenty of other ways to get around Da Nang! One of these is by bus, although the services here aren’t nearly as advanced as in other cities in Vietnam.

A popular way to get around the city is by motorbike. You’ll find plenty of rentals in Da Nang and they’re cheap to hire too but the roads are pretty crazy so just be cautious.

Lastly, you can get around Da Nang via taxis but there’s one thing to keep in mind! The taxis here are more expensive than in many other places in Vietnam so try to avoid them if you can.

 

Days 11-12: Hue

Hue is a city located in Central Vietnam and it was the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty. This fascinating place was actually the national capital from 1802 to 1945, and it’s famous for its rich history and architecture.

Situated along the Perfume City and home to a ton of awesome attractions, this isn’t a city that you want to leave off your 3 weeks Vietnam Itinerary!

Hue is also home to the Imperial City which was once one of the most important sites in the country. Here, you’ll find a variety of palaces, shrines, and gardens that were once home to the Imperial Family.

Whether you’re looking to learn about Vietnam’s history or you’d prefer to taste your way around the city, Hue has something for everyone!

Things to do in Hue

One of the best places to visit in Hue has to be the famous abandoned waterpark. Ho Thuy Tien is a must for any Vietnam 3-week itinerary as it’s one of the most interesting sights you’ll come across in the country.

Ho Thuy Tien Waterpark originally opened in 2004 but unfortunately, it closed in 2011, and then again in 2013 after another company tried to turn it into an eco-tourism site. Although you may have to ‘bribe’ security guards to let you in, there’s a large ‘dragon aquarium’ here that’s very impressive!

• Head out on a city tour of Hue – Here’s a great tour that will take you to the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda, and on a cruise of the Perfume River
• Explore the Imperial City
• Go on a tour of the Demilitarised Zone – This tour will take you to the DMZ and you’ll get to learn all about the Vietnam War
• Visit Thien Mu Pagoda
• Try some of Hue’s delicious food – This 5-hour tour will take you around the city via motorbike and you’ll get to try some fantastic dishes
• Visit the Tombs of the Ancient Emperors

Where to Stay in Hue

Budget: Nice Hue Hotel

This is one of the best places we stayed during our time in Vietnam! Nice Hue Hotel offers budget-friendly modern rooms, fantastic facilities, and a great location.

As it’s so central you’ll find plenty of awesome attractions nearby too, and there’s bicycle hire available at the property.

Mid-range: Cherish Hue Hotel

Just a few steps away from the Perfume River, Cherish Hue Hotel is one of the best options in the city! Boasting a swimming pool, a restaurant, a bar, and a fitness centre, this place has so much to offer.

You can also get spa treatments at this hotel, and there’s a hot tub on-site.

Luxury: Melia Vinpearl Hue

Many of the suites at this 5* hotel offer fantastic views of Hue City and the Perfume River! However, it’s the facilities that make this place stand out.

With an outdoor swimming pool that overlooks the city, a spa & wellness centre, and a bar, this is the perfect option if you’re looking for a luxury hotel!

How To Get Around Hue

There are a couple of ways to get around Hue so you won’t have any problems travelling between the tourist attractions. Many of the popular sights are relatively close to each other, so you can easily walk some areas of the city.

For those destinations that are located out of the city centre, you can get around by bus. There are around fourteen bus routes in total and these will take you to other areas of the province.

Your next option is to use a taxi to get around, and there are several companies in the city. The best and cheapest way to book a taxi is by using the taxi app GRAB.

Lastly, you can either hire a bicycle or motorbike to get around. Just be cautious of the roads although if you’ve already travelled to the larger cities, you’re in for a treat.

Days 13-15: Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is a small city in the Northern province and is known for its phenomenal landscapes and limestone caves.

Although the beauty of this area is unparalleled, fewer travellers actually take the time to explore Ninh Binh. However, this place is a must if you’re spending 3 weeks in Vietnam!

Often referred to as ‘Ha Long on Land’ because of its spectacular landscapes, this is the place to visit if you’re looking to spend some time away from Vietnam’s chaotic cities.

Whether you’re looking to take a paddleboat along the river, visit traditional temples, or explore lush rice paddies, this beautiful part of the country has something for everyone. Ninh Binh is also known for its wildlife so keep your eyes peeled!

Things to do in Ninh Binh

The best way to view the dramatic landscapes that Ninh Binh has to offer is by hiking up to Mua Caves. Mua Caves is one of the most popular attractions in the region and it’s not hard to see why!

Once you’ve made it to the viewpoint at the top, you’ll be treated to epic vistas of rice paddies, limestone mountains, and rivers. Not to mention the fact that there’s a dragon statue that runs along the top of the peak.

This was honestly one of our favourite places throughout our 3-week Vietnam itinerary so make sure Mua Caves is on your list!

• Head to Tam Coc – This full-day tour of Tam Coc includes a riverboat tour and a buffet lunch!
• Take a bicycle tour
• Visit Hoa Lua – This tour will take you to Hoa Lua, Mua Cave, and Tam Coc among other destinations!
• Explore Bai Dinh Pagoda and Bich Dong Pagoda
• Spend some time at Cuc Phuong National Park – This awesome tour includes a visit to Cuc Phuong National Park and a few other places including Tam Coc
• Visit Phat Diem Cathedral

Where to Stay in Ninh Binh

Budget: Hang Mua Central Homestay

This gorgeous homestay is situated right by the entrance to Mua Caves and it’s not too far from Tam Coc either! The views from Hang Mua Central Homestay are insane and the rooms are extremely cheap too.

If you’re looking to lower your costs then this place is a great option!

Mid-range: An’s Eco Garden Resort

Offering unique van-style properties, cosy bungalows, and lake-view rooms, there is a wide variety of accommodation options at this resort. They all come with continental breakfast included too.

There’s also an outdoor swimming pool at this resort where you can relax.

Luxury: Ninh Binh Hidden Charm Hotel & Resort

This 5* hotel features an outdoor swimming pool, an on-site restaurant, a bar, and a spa. Not only are the rooms beautifully designed but some of them offer spectacular views!

The area around Ninh Binh Hidden Charm Hotel & Resort is beautiful too, and you can hire a bicycle from here to explore.

How To Get Around Ninh Binh

Unlike many of the other destinations in this 3-week Vietnam itinerary, Ninh Binh is relatively widespread. Most of the attractions aren’t located close together and you’ll need to use transport to get around.

The best way to get around is to hire your own scooter. This gives you plenty of flexibility when planning your visit, and you won’t be set to the schedule of tours and excursions.

If you’re not able to hire a scooter yourself, then you’ll need to find other ways to get around. The next best option is to hire a bicycle as the roads are relatively flat in this area. Rentals are cheap so they won’t leave a dent in your wallet either.

Lastly, there are some taxi companies in Ninh Binh that you can take advantage of. However, you’ll probably need to negotiate a price for the day!

Days 16-18: Ha Long

Ha Long bay is one of the must-visit places in Vietnam! It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s known for its beautiful emerald waters and huge limestone islands.

This gorgeous destination is one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of Nature’ although it’s not just the beauty of the area that intrigues visitors. The name ‘Ha Long’ translates to ‘descending dragon’ and there’s a fascinating legend behind the region.

It’s said that Vietnamese people are actually descended from dragons, and one of the legends is that a Mother Dragon and her children were sent down by the gods to help the local people defeat invaders.

Once the enemy was defeated, giant emeralds were scatted around Ha Long Bay, and these emeralds were thought to be the teeth of the Mother Dragon herself!

Things to do in Ha Long

Cruises through Ha Long bay are very popular, or you can go on sea kayaking expeditions. The overnight cruises look incredible but they are expensive and we just couldn’t afford to go on one, unfortunately. We wish we could have, so we will be back one day!

During your 3 weeks in Vietnam, you just HAVE to visit Ha Long Bay!

Here are some other things to do in Ha Long:

• Go on a day cruise – Day cruises of Ha Long Bay are available from Hanoi if you only have enough time to do a day trip
• Visit Cat Ba Island
• Spend some time kayaking in Bai Tu Long Bay
• Admire the views from Poem Mountain (if you dare)
• Have some fun at Sun World Halong Park
• Explore some of the nearby caves

Where to Stay in Ha Long

If you’re on a budget then you may want to stay on the mainland of Halong and take a day trip out to the bay, rather than spend your money on an overnight cruise.

Budget: BBQ Hostel

BBQ Hostel is one of the best budget-friendly properties in Ha Long Bay as you’ll benefit from a terrace area, free WiFi, an on-site restaurant, and a bar. There are also BBQ facilities at the hostel and you can play table tennis too!

There are a variety of rooms to choose from so there are plenty of options.

Mid-range: Muong Thanh Grand Bai Chay

This beautiful hotel is located right along the bayfront and so many of the rooms naturally offer stunning views. Each one is spacious and features plenty of amenities including free toiletries, air conditioning, and a TV.

There are plenty of facilities here too including a restaurant, bar, indoor pool, and a terrace area.

Luxury: Citadines Marina Halong

Citadines Marina Halong is one of the most beautiful hotels in Ha Long Bay and it’s the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a luxury getaway! There are rooms, studios, and apartments available, and some of these sleep up to six people.

If you decide to stay here you’ll benefit from two swimming pools, a restaurant, a bar, and a fitness centre!

Cruise: Rosy Cruises

If you’re looking for a cruise option in Ha Long Bay then check out Rosy Cruises! This huge ship has a variety of suites available and some of them feature a private balcony, a bathtub, and huge glass windows where you’ll be treated to stunning views.

You’ll be able to take part in a variety of activities too including a cooking class and kayaking!

How To Get Around Ha Long

You’ll want to see the two main parts of Ha Long: the city and the bay of course. First of all, if you’re exploring the central city you can generally get around by walking or cycling.

There isn’t too much to do in Ha Long city but it’s the perfect place to relax, eat some delicious food, and admire the views. For this reason, you won’t need to travel around too much.

GRAB is available in Ha Long and this is the best way to book a taxi. Prices are cheap and you’ll get to see what you’re paying upfront. Otherwise, you can hire a scooter or car to get around.

When it comes to exploring Ha Long Bay your best bet is to book a multi-day cruise if you’ve got the time or a day trip that will take you around.

Days 19-21: Hanoi

Hanoi was our last stop in Vietnam before we flew out to Borneo and we had a fantastic time here! This city is the capital of Vietnam and it’s famous for its architecture, culture, and delicious food.

Hanoi is also one of the most historic cities with a history dating back to the third century BCE. Throughout the years it’s been part of Han China, French Indochina and lastly, Vietnam once the country gained its independence.

This is part of the reason why there’s so much fusion in terms of food and architecture, which makes Hanoi an interesting place to visit.

Home to a variety of fantastic markets, temples, and cultural attractions, you won’t run out of things to do in this city! For that reason, Hanoi is a must for any 3-week Vietnam itinerary!

Things to do in Hanoi

One of the best things to do in Hanoi is to visit the Old Quarter. This is where a lot of trade takes place and it’s one of the most historic areas of the city.

The Old Quarter is one of Hanoi’s hot spots and you’ll find plenty of authentic restaurants, cultural attractions, and the iconic Night Market here!

Here are some other things to do in Hanoi:

• Go on a walking food tour – This street food walking tour is a fantastic option as your guide will take you through the Old Quarter where you’ll get to try plenty of local specialities.
• Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake
• Watch a show at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre – You can book your entrance tickets in advance!
• Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
• Explore Ben Thanh Market
• Hanoi Train Street is closed now, but there are other places where you can view the train from!

Where to Stay in Hanoi

Budget: Hanoi City Backpackers Hostel

This hostel is located in the famous Old Quarter so it’s close to many of Hanoi’s iconic attractions. There are both dorm beds and private rooms available so there’s something for everyone.

Even better, there’s an on-site bar where you’ll benefit from free local beer and wine at Happy Hour!

This is one of the most luxurious hotels you’ll find in Hanoi as it boasts two on-site restaurants, three bars, an on-site spa, and a rooftop pool. There are a variety of rooms available and many of them offer striking city views.

You’ll also find plenty of popular attractions nearby!

How To Get Around Hanoi

For the last destination in this 3-week Vietnam itinerary, you’ll need to use transport to get around. There’s no denying that Hanoi is a huge city, and there’s so much to see!

First of all, the city’s public bus system is extensive and frequent. There are a variety of routes that you can use to get around and these generally operate between 6 am and 11 pm.

Like many other destinations in Vietnam, GRAB and Gojek are available to help you get around. There are reputable taxi companies in the city, but they’ll often be much more expensive.

Lastly, you can hire a scooter to explore the city. Just beware that the roads in Hanoi are chaotic and there doesn’t seem to be much of a right of way! Bicycles are also an option, but again be careful if you’re on the roads.

Only have two weeks in Vietnam?

If you’ve only got two weeks in Vietnam then you’ll have to leave out some of the places on this itinerary!

The country as a whole can take a while to travel through especially if you’re travelling from one end of Vietnam to the other.

If you’re looking to condense this itinerary then here’s an idea of how you can do it!

However, we’d recommend spending at least three weeks in Vietnam if you can!

Sapa

If you’re spending more than 3 weeks in Vietnam then another great place to visit is Sapa. It’s a scenic town that’s located in Northwest Vietnam and is known for its cool mountain climate and lush rice terraces!

If you’ve had enough of the country’s chaotic cities and you’re looking for a little bit of peace then this charming town should be included on your itinerary. Not to mention, the scenery here is absolutely breathtaking.

One of the best things to do in Sapa is to go trekking through the hills as you’ll also get to visit some of the local villages nearby!

Nha Trang

Nha Trang is a coastal city that’s considered to be the ‘seafood capital’ of the country. So if you’re a huge foodie then this is a place that you may want to visit.

Aside from the endless restaurants that you can dine at, Nha Trang is also home to plenty of pristine beaches including Tran Phu, Doc Let, and Long Beach. This makes it the perfect coastal getaway!

If you’re still not convinced to visit then you’ll find lots of endless islands nearby which make for the perfect day trip. Not only that but there are plenty of fantastic cultural sites for you to visit.

Aside from the variety of things to do, Nha Trang is a great place to add to your itinerary if you’re looking for a luxury escape.

Da Lat

Da Lat doesn’t often make it onto a 3-week Vietnam itinerary, but it’s a great place to visit. This hill town is known as ‘Le Petit Paris’ and it’s located at 1,500 metres above sea level.

Many places in Vietnam are known for being hot and humid, but Da Lat is a welcome escape from that. Famous for its refreshing cool temperatures, this resort town is a great place to relax!

There are so many fantastic things to do in Da Lat like visiting the beautiful Elephant Falls, spending some time at the Valley of Love, and admiring Linh Phuoc Pagoda. With so much on offer, you’ll want to spend at least two days here if you can.

Phu Quoc Island

Located off the mainland, you’ll find the beautiful island of Phu Quoc which is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. If you’re looking for pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and swaying palm trees, then this is somewhere you’ll want to add to your Vietnam itinerary!

Due to the island only receiving electricity from the mainland in 2013, Phu Quoc wasn’t always so popular. However, today it even challenges the likes of Nha Trang due to its unparalleled beauty.

To reach the island you can either fly to Phu Quoc International Airport or catch a ferry from Ha Tien or Rach Gia.

Phong Nha

Next, you’ve got Phong Nha which is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam if you’re a fan of natural wonders. This part of the country is home to the beautiful Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

Within this national park, you’ll find plenty of hiking trails but the main attraction here is the caves. For starters, the world’s largest cave is found in Phong Nha-Ke Band and it’s called Son Doong. In this cave, there are geological formations the size of Big Ben!

Other popular caves in the area include Tu Lan, Phong Nha, Pygmy Cave, Hang En, and Paradise Cave. As you can see, this place has a lot to offer.

Cat Tien National Park

Although you might not have time to include Cat Tien National Park in your 3 weeks in Vietnam itinerary, you definitely should if you’re staying in the country a bit longer!

This National Park is home to endless untouched forests where you’ll get a chance to encounter wonderful wildlife. If you’re lucky, you might get to spot Asian elephants, clouded leopards, sun bears, and a wide variety of primates including gibbons.

Just keep in mind that you’ll need to book in advance if you’d like to visit, as tourist numbers are limited to protect the park!

How to Get to Vietnam

There are a couple of options when travelling to Vietnam; you can either get here by air, land, or boat.

The majority of people tend to enter Vietnam by air, and the main international airports are found in Da Nang, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City.

There are plenty of budget airlines that serve Vietnam so you’ll have no problems finding cheap flights. However, you’ll probably want to book them in advance and just allow some extra cost for baggage.

Another way to get into Vietnam is by travelling overland. When using the train, you’ve only got one option and that’s if you’re entering the country from China!

In terms of buses, there are plenty of options that allow you to travel into the country. Popular routes run into Vietnam from Cambodia and Laos and these will often save you a lot of money!

Lastly, you can catch a boat from Phnom Penh in Cambodia that will take you along the Mekong Delta.

How to Get around Vietnam

Vietnam is an easy destination to travel through as there are so many transport options up and down the country. However, the most popular way to get around is by travelling overland – whether that be by bus or train.

First of all, Vietnam has a pretty reasonable train network and the fares are fixed. One of the most popular train routes runs between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh although the journey takes around 30 hours in total!

The train tickets are generally separated into four classes, and these vary in price; especially during the peak season. Just make sure you book your tickets in advance!

Your other option is to travel around by bus, and that’s what we did most of the time. It was a cheap way to travel and some of the buses travel overnight, so you can save on accommodation too.

Many of them are actually sleeper buses so you’ll have your own bed!

Other ways to get around Vietnam include:

• Catching a flight: Many people fly between Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi if they’re short on time. However, there are plenty of fantastic places to visit in between if you’re not in a rush!
• Long-distance taxis: If you don’t mind splashing the cash then you can always travel between destinations in taxis. Just remember that this will increase your costs considerably.
• Renting a car or motorbike: Many people choose to hire a scooter to get around Vietnam and you can get some fantastic rental deals. You’ve also got the option of hiring a car if you want a bit more space!

Throughout our travels in Southeast Asia, we used 12GO Asia to find cheap transport tickets. Otherwise, you can often book bus and train tickets through your accommodation or tour agencies.

Just make sure to compare prices and book in advance if you can!

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

The best time to visit Vietnam will depend on which part of the country you’re travelling to. This 3-week Vietnam itinerary will see you explore the North and South of the country, so you’ll likely have to compromise on the weather at some point.

Let’s start with the North; the best time to visit Northern Vietnam is during Spring and Autumn, so March-April and September-November. That goes for the likes of Hanoi, Halong Bay, and Sapa.

If you’re visiting Central Vietnam then the peak season runs between February and August, with temperatures reaching up to 30°C. Just keep that in mind if you’re heading to Hue or Hoi An!

For Southern Vietnam, the best time to visit is between December-May and that goes for Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. With that in mind, March-April tends to be the best time to visit the whole country.

If you’re travelling on a budget then Vietnam is one of the best countries to visit! Everything from accommodation to food is affordable here, so you won’t have to worry about spending a lot of money.

You could easily follow our 3-week Vietnam itinerary on an average budget of £40 per day. You could even get by on less. We spent around £35 per day for the two of us which seems like nothing, but we got by just fine.

Just keep in mind you’ll spend more on days where you’re doing lots of activities and excursions!

Is Vietnam better to visit than Thailand?

Both Thailand and Vietnam will offer an unforgettable vacation in terms of landscapes, food, and culture. Each country is also affordable so it’s completely up to you where you’d like to visit!

Thailand would be the better option if you’re looking for beaches and nightlife, whereas Vietnam is more suitable for those looking for authentic experiences and breathtaking landscapes.

What is the safest city in Vietnam?

The whole country of Vietnam is relatively safe and violent crime is extremely rare, especially among tourists, so you don’t need to worry about any of the destinations on our 3-week Vietnam itinerary. The one thing you’ll want to keep an eye on is petty crimes such as theft, so make sure you keep your belongings close to you.

Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh are thought to be the safest cities in Vietnam.
