The Top 10 Apps You Need To Have Whilst Travelling
Last Updated: August 15 2019
Whilst travelling South East Asia we found having certain apps on our phones made life so much easier. This varied from looking for somewhere to stay to finding the cheapest taxi price. In this post we want to share with you some of the apps you should download for when you travel. Here are 10 apps to have when travelling, in no particular order.
1. Skyscanner:
You may have already heard of skyscanner but if not it is a flight comparison app. It searches lots of different companies to find you the best flight prices, and can also tell you what is the cheapest month to fly to a country. This is great if you are flexible because you can compare the best prices and monitor how they change through the month, and different months of the year. This helps you catch the cheapest price before taking you directly to the booking site. Skyscanner is one of our top apps to have when travelling!
2. Bluebird:
This app is for those travelling to Bali. In Bali there is a lot of disagreement between taxi companies and the local drivers. This is due to some charging really low prices and some charging high prices. Bluebird are recognised as one of the most trustowrthy and reliable companies so their app is really useful. It works just like the Grab and Uber apps and is easy to use. The thing we found best was how it gives an estimated price for the journey. This means if you can’t get a bluebird taxi you can negotiate a fair price with other drivers because you know the price you should be paying. However sometimes the app may not find you a driver. This is because there are none in the area. Also look out when flagging down a bluebird that you are getting the right company. Other taxi companies have started to design their names, logos, and car colour similar to Bluebird to get people thinking they are getting a bluebird. For example we saw blue biro, and blue taxi.
3. Grab:
Okay this is another taxi app that is similar to Bluebird, but Grab operate in a number of countries. One of the countries we used Grab a lot was in Malaysia and we found the service to be great. It is a great app to have as you can get a taxi easily and the prices can be really cheap. We used Grab at Kuala Lumpur airport at 12:30am and we were in a taxi 10 minutes later, for a decent price. All other taxi company prices tended to go up by an extra 50% after 12am but the price we got was very reasonable. This is definitely one of our top apps to have when travelling.
4. City Maps:
This app is awesome because you can download maps from any country for offline use. We know google maps can be used but we found City Maps more reliable when it came to finding our location. The maps also had more details as they were city or country specific. The one problem with this app is that you are only allowed one free offline map download. However we found that simply uninstalling the app and re-installing it again gave us another free download each time. We then used that download for the next country we were visiting.
5. Maps.Me:
Yes this is just another map app haha, but bare with us because these apps are good for different things. Maps.Me is completely free when it comes to downloading maps and also gives you directions to your destination unlike City Maps. However because it allows you to download any map free we found it didn’t seem to be as reliable as City Maps. We definitely found it useful though.
6. Booking.com:
We have always booked our accommodation through booking.com. They are trustworthy, reliable and most of the time you don’t need to pay for the room until you arrive. One other great thing is how you get further discount off accommodation the more you use it to book accommodation. This is called ‘genius’ and can get you some really good deals. We always find booking.com to have really cheap competitive prices. Booking.com is another of our top top apps to have when travelling, as it makes finding good accommodation so much easier!
7. Tripadvisor:
Your bound to know this one already! If not though, Tripadvisor basically shows you reviews of accommodation, tours, places to eat and so much more. This is great especially when booking accommodation. Some times a nice looking hotel may turn out to be horrible, and it is so much easier to avoid when you can read lots of peoples reviews. Do look out though because you can get people giving 1 star because the sun wasn’t out on their holiday!
8. Pinterest:
Pinterest is a fantastic app for finding places you want to see while travelling. We use it a lot to read blog posts from others about where we are staying. Not only can you find beautiful places but you can also find lots of tips. These tips range from travel tips, transport and budget tips. We find it very helpful to know how to travel safely and the best places to go. If you want to follow our Pinterest, we share a lot about our tips on travel. You can find our profile here.
9. Camera Connect App:
The name of this app will vary depending on the type of camera you have. If your like us and love to take photos with two people in the shot, using this makes it super easy. You can set your camera up on a tripod, or even a bench and connect your camera to your phone. Once you have the camera in position and the settings you want all you have to do is press a button and the camera will take a photo. You can also set the camera on a timer which means you have time to put your phone in your pocket if you don’t want it in the shot.
10. Candy Crush:
You have to have a game to play right? When sat waiting for a flight, or a bus or anything candy crush is a great app to have. There are endless amounts of levels and it is good fun. Trust us when we say make sure you have a game on your phone, because you are guaranteed to be waiting around at some point.
We hope this list makes your travels easier, and thanks for reading!
