Halong Bay is undeniably one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, which makes it a must for any Vietnam bucket list. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its beautiful emerald waters and huge limestone islands, and the best way to explore is by heading out on a cruise.
Known as one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of Nature’, Halong Bay has a lot to offer. While out on a cruise, you can explore the islands, head out on a kayak, or simply relax. Many tour operators will also include cultural experiences in the package such as a cooking class.
We’d recommend shopping around for the best deals though as some packages can be expensive!
2. Look for wildlife in Cat Tien National Park
- Location: The provinces of Đồng Nai, Bình Phước and Lâm Đồng in Southern Vietnam
- Where to Stay: Thuy Tien Ecolodge
Cat Tien is undoubtedly one of the best national parks in Asia! It’s one of the country’s largest nature reserves, covering an impressive 720 sq km (278 sq miles).
This national park is also one of the best places to spot wildlife in Vietnam so naturally, it’s a must for nature lovers. Cat Tien is home to a variety of wildlife including the Javan Rhinoceros, Asian elephants, sun bears, clouded leopards, and gibbons, as well as plenty of birdlife.
You can explore the national park by boat and there are some awesome hiking trails here too! The great thing about Cat Tien is that you can explore self-guided, and there are plenty of activities on offer.

- Location: Quang Nam Province, Central Vietnam

Located along the Thu Bon River, Hoi An is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam. Here, you’ll find ancient buildings adorned with colourful lanterns, historic pagodas, and charming river boats. Hoi An becomes even more beautiful at night when this ancient city is all lit up.
Some of the most popular attractions here include the Japanese Covered Bridge (also known as Chùa Cầu or Cau Pagoda), the Night Market, and An Bang Beach. The best way to explore is by hiring a bicycle!
4. Visit My Son Sanctuary
- Location: Thánh địa Mỹ Sơn, Duy Xuyên District, Quảng Nam
- Suggested Tour: My Son Sanctuary Early Morning Guided Tour
- Where to Stay: Zest Resort & Spa Hoi An
Easily visited on a day trip from Hoi An, there’s My Son Sanctuary. Here, you can explore what’s left of the Ancient Kingdom of Champa, which dates back to between the 4th and 13th centuries.
At My Son, there’s a complex of temples to visit, each as impressive as the last. This complex was developed over 10 centuries and there are a variety of unique architectural designs that you can admire. These symbolise the greatness of Mount Meru, a mystical and sacred mountain in Hindu mythology.
Allow at least 2-3 hours for your visit at My Son Sanctuary and explore with a guide if possible. That way, you’ll be able to learn all about this historical site.
5. Wander around Hoy Thuy Tien
- Location: Thủy Bằng, Hương Thủy, Thừa Thiên Huế
- Where to Stay: Nice Hue Hotel
If you’re looking for unique experiences in Vietnam, head to Hoy Thuy Tien. This abandoned waterpark can easily be visited from the city of Hue (although you may need to bribe a security guard or two).
Although originally opened to the public in 2004, it was abandoned shortly after. Nowadays it’s kind of creepy to visit, although the architecture is really striking. The highlight for us is the huge dragon aquarium, but the old water slides and grandstands are equally impressive.
To reach Ho Thuy Tien, you can take a taxi from Hue or hire a scooter. As the waterpark is quite large, many people choose to go with the latter, as it’s easier to get around.
6. Try the local cuisine
- Suggested Tour: Ho Chi Minh Street Food Tour By Motorbike + Sightseeing
- Where to Stay: Any of the major cities
We couldn’t put together this Vietnam bucket list without including the country’s delicious food! Vietnamese cuisine is delicious and there are so many fantastic dishes to try.
Banh-mi, a type of stuffed baguette is one of the most popular options. You’ll find these all over the country, and they’re typically stuffed with a type of meat, vegetables, herbs, spices, and condiments.
Other tasty Vietnamese dishes include Pho (a traditional staple), Banh xeo, Cao lau, and Bun Cha. You’ll also want to try Goi Cuon, which are translucent spring rolls. For the best experience, dine at local eateries or opt for a street food tour as your guide will take you to all the best foodie spots.
7. Spend some time in Ho Chi Minh City
- Location: Southern Vietnam
- Suggested Tour: Private Half-Day Tour by U.S Army Jeep
- Where to Stay: Thuy Huong Homestay
Ho Chi Minh was one of our favourite places in Vietnam. Formally known as Saigon, it’s the largest city in Vietnam with a population of over 8 million people.
Boasting mouth-watering street food, towering skyscrapers, and vibrant culture, Ho Chi Minh has something for everyone. There is lots to see too, with popular attractions including the War Remnants Museum, Bui Vien Walking Street, Independence Palace, and the Notre Dame Cathedral.
We’d recommend spending at least three days in Ho Chi Minh, as this will give you enough time to visit the most popular sights. You can also take a day tour out of the city to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels or Mekong Delta if you have time.
8. Explore Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park
- Location: Quang Binh Province, North-Central Vietnam

Although not one of the most-visited destinations in Vietnam, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a great addition to any itinerary. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the oldest karst mountains in Asia, which date back around 400 million years.
Boasting tropical jungles, underground rivers, and an impressive cave system, this national park has so much to offer. Three of the highlights include Phong Nha Cave (one of the world’s longest cave systems), Son Doong (the largest cave on Earth), and Paradise Cave.
There’s also plenty of wildlife to be found in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, including the giant antlered muntjac, Sunda pangolin, clouded leopard, and white-cheeked gibbon. Just be aware that access is only permitted via an organised tour.
9. Visit the Imperial City of Hue
- Location: Lê Huân, Phú Hậu, Thành phố Huế, Thừa Thiên Huế,
- Suggested Tour: Hue Walking Tour to Imperial Citadel and Forbidden City
- Where to Stay: Spatel d’Annam – Imperial Boutique Spa & Hotel
The Imperial City is one of the best places to see Vietnam! This walled palace dates back to the early 1800s and is another of the country’s Unesco World Heritage Sites.
Unfortunately, Hue’s Imperial City was badly bombed during the American and French Wars. What’s left is only a fraction of the original site, but it’s still certainly worth a visit. You could easily spend a few hours wandering around, and if you go with a guide, you’ll learn so much about the area’s history.
During the afternoon there are fewer crowds here and you’ll get a break from the afternoon sun. Just watch your footing as you explore this incredible site as there is rubble, cracked tiles, and roots around.
10. Walk along the famous Golden Bridge
- Location: Bà Nà Hills, Thôn An Sơn, Hòa Vang, Da Nang
- Suggested Tour: Ba Na Hills with Golden Bridge Private Tour
- Where to Stay: Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills
If you’ve got Instagram, you’ll have undoubtedly seen the famous Golden Hands Bridge in Vietnam. Located in Bà Nà Hills, this huge bridge offers a very unique design, as it’s seemingly held up by two huge hands.
At 150 metres (492 feet) long, walking over the Golden Bridge is quite the experience. The bridge connects nearby gardens with a cable car station and is set at 1,414 metres (4,639 feet) above sea level. As such, you’ll be greeted with jaw-dropping views as you wander over it.
Just be aware that the Golden Bridge is one of Vietnam’s most popular attractions. It can get extremely busy here with everyone wanting to take photographs, especially on weekends.
11. Head to the Cu Chi Tunnels
- Location: Phú Hiệp, Củ Chi, Ho Chi Minh City
- Suggested Tour: Cu Chi Tunnels Half-day Tour
- Where to Stay: La Vela Saigon Hotel
The Cu Chi Tunnels are another must for your Vietnam bucket list. Easily accessible from Ho Chi Minh, these tunnels played an important role in the American War. They were built to protect the Viet Cong (VC) from American soldiers and meant that people could travel underground without being detected.
Today, stretches of the Cu Chi Tunnels can be visited by the public. On these tours, you’ll drop down to your hands and knees as you explore the tunnels, and see what life would have been like during the war. There are also shooting ranges on-site if that interests you.
Just keep in mind that visiting these tunnels isn’t suitable for those who are claustrophobic.
12. Relax on the beaches of Phú Quốc Island
- Location: Kien Giang Province
- Suggested Tour: Islands Full-Day Snorkeling Tour
- Where to Stay: Valentina Resort & Spa Phu Quoc
Phú Quốc Island is easily one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam. Famous for its white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and swaying palm trees, it’s the country’s largest island.
Nicknamed ‘Pearl Island’, the highlight of Phú Quốc has to be its beaches. These include Long Beach, Sao Beach, Ong Lang Beach, and Khem Beach. Aside from lounging on the beach, there are ample relaxation opportunities on this island, one of which is getting a traditional massage.
Other popular attractions on Phú Quốc include Ham Ninh Fishing Village, the Phu Quoc Prison History Museum, and Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park. The island also has a fantastic night market where you can try the local cuisine.
13. Hike up to Mua Caves
- Location: Ninh Xuân, Hoa Lư District, Ninh Bình
- Suggested Tour: From Hanoi: Tam Coc, Hoa Lu & Mua Caves Full-Day Trip

At the top of Ngoa Long Mountain, there’s also an ornate stone dragon and an impressive tower. To reach the top, you’ll need to climb around 500 steps which can be challenging. Take your time and allow around 1-1.5 hours for your visit.
We’d recommend basing yourself in Ninh Binh as the scenery is gorgeous, but day trips also run from Hanoi if you’re short of time.
14. Explore the capital city of Hanoi
- Location: Northern Vietnam
- Suggested Tour: Hanoi Jeep Tours: Food + Culture + Sight + Fun

The Old Quarter is found at the heart of Hanoi and is where you’ll find the city’s main night market. St. Joseph Cathedral, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the popular Train Street are also found in this part of the city!
Other notable attractions in Hanoi include Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, and the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. To visit all these spots (and the city’s other gems), you’ll want to allow at least 3 full days here.
15. Head on a riverboat to Tam Coc
- Location: Ninh Hải, Hoa Lư District, Ninh Bình
- Suggested Tour: From Hanoi: Tam Coc, Hoa Lu & Mua Caves Full-Day Trip
- Where to Stay: Tam Coc Lion Kings Hotel & Resort
Next up is Tam Coc, another of Vietnam’s beautiful landscapes. It almost gives you the vibe of an inland Halong Bay with the area’s huge limestone outcrops. Although, instead of water, you’ll be surrounded by lush green rice paddies.
The best way to experience Tam Coc is by heading on a boat down the river. Interestingly, the local people control the boat oars with their feet which is pretty impressive to see. However, it’s the natural beauty of Tam Coc that will blow you away!
As you head through flooded landscapes, you can take in the huge rocky outcrops all around you. If you’re lucky, you might even get to spot mountain goats clambering along the cliffs.

The best way to experience Sapa is by hiking through this beautiful hill country. However, there are plenty of other awesome activities on offer too, including mountain biking and zip-lining.
There are also some fantastic homestays in this part of Vietnam so you can enjoy an authentic experience while here! 18. Take a river cruise along the Mekong Delta
- Location: Southern Vietnam
- Suggested Tour: From Ho Chi Minh City: Mekong Delta & Vinh Trang Pagoda Tour
- Where to Stay: Sheraton Can Tho
The Mekong River flows throughout Asia, with the Mekong Delta being located in Southern Vietnam. This picturesque region is known for its immense beauty and fantastic culture.
If you want to explore the Mekong Delta, you can either visit on a day trip from Ho Chi Minh or stay in one of the surrounding towns or villages (Can Tho is one of the best options). The best way to visit is by heading out on a river cruise, some of which can be multi-day trips.
On a river cruise, you’ll often visit several destinations, including a floating market, historical sites, and temples. Not to mention, you can appreciate the Mekong Delta’s culinary scene, and try out some waterside activities.
19. Head to the Marble Mountains
- Location: 81 Huyền Trân Công Chúa, Hoà Hải, Ngũ Hành Sơn, Đà Nẵng
- Suggested Tour: Da Nang: Lady Buddha, Marble Mountains, and Am Phu Cave Tour
- Where to Stay: Melia Danang Beach Resort
When planning your bucket list for Vietnam, make sure you include the Marble Mountains. Located in Da Nang, this gorgeous place is made up of five limestone mountains. It’s also an important Buddha worship site so has a lot to offer.
There’s also a story behind the ‘Marble Mountains’. According to local legends, a dragon once laid an egg on Non Nuoc Beach. Out of this egg hatched a beautiful girl, and the eggshell cracked into five pieces, leaving behind the five mountains that stand here today.
To reach the top of these mountains, you’ll need to walk up lots of stairs. This can be challenging, but there’s an elevator for those who are unable to climb.
20. Drive the Hai Van Pass
- Location: Between the border of Da Nang and Thừa Thiên–Huế Province
- Suggested Tour: Easy Rider Private Tour via Hai Van Pass
If you’re a confident driver then we’d recommend driving the Hai Van Pass. This scenic route is known as one of the world’s most beautiful roads. It’s located on Highway 1 and runs between Da Nang City and Thừa Thiên–Huế Province.
The Hai Van Pass covers a total distance of around 21 km (13 miles). Along the way, you’ll get an epic view of Da Nang, as well as its surrounding white sand beaches, steep hills, and lush jungle. Just try to time this drive with the dry season so the road isn’t too wet.
You’ll find plenty of affordable scooter/motorbike rentals in Da Nang. Alternatively, for those who aren’t as confident, you can take a tour along the Hai Van Pass.
21. Spend some time in Da Nang

24. Explore the city of Dalat
- Location: Lâm Đồng Province, Central Vietnam

Finally, there’s the city of Dalat. Often referred to as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’, this place is beautiful. Here, you’ll find stunning natural landscapes as Dalat is located in the Central Highlands. It’s also centred around a lake which is another huge bonus to visiting.
Compared to other areas of Vietnam, Dalat offers a milder climate. This makes exploring the city more pleasant, especially as there’s so much to see in the surrounding area.
Highlights include the Valley of Love, Elephant Falls, Linh Phuoc Pagoda, and Datanla Waterfall. We’d also recommend spending some time at the Crazy House, one of the strangest buildings in the world. To see all these attractions, allow at least 2-3 days for your visit.
